Foca Universal Bayonet Lens to Sony E / Nikon Z / L-Mount Adapter
This is a custom adapter for using Foca Universal bayonet-mount lenses with modern mirrorless cameras.
The Foca bayonet mount is a rare French lens mount used by the Foca Universal camera system.
This was a particularly significant project for muk camera service because customers had been asking for an adapter for this mount for many years, long before I started using 3D printers.
At the time, there was no practical way for me to manufacture this adapter economically. The availability of 3D printing eventually made it possible to produce the complex mechanical shape in very small quantities.
The first adapter was developed at the request of a customer who wanted to use a Foca lens on a Canon EOS R. The customer provided the camera, the lens, and a metal camera-side bayonet flange, making it possible to examine the actual equipment and develop the adapter.
The available space was extremely limited. The Foca mount has a flange focal distance approximately 1 mm longer than Leica M, and after allowing for the thickness of the metal camera-side flange, there was only about 5 mm of space available for the adapter mechanism.
The lens locking mechanism therefore had to be incorporated into this very limited space.
The final design uses a through-body locking mechanism that directly presses against the Foca lens bayonet. This made it possible to reproduce the lens locking function while keeping the adapter extremely thin.
The adapter was subsequently developed for several modern camera mounts:
Sony E
Nikon Z
Leica L / L-mount
Compatible Foca lenses include:
Foca Oplar 50mm f/2.8
Foca Oplar 28mm f/4.5
Foca Oplarex 50mm f/1.9
Different Foca lenses can have slightly different bayonet dimensions. For this reason, several versions of the locking component are available, and individual adjustments may be possible when necessary.
The original Foca lenses also have interesting mechanical characteristics. Some lenses have a long rear skirt containing a straight-line focusing mechanism, rather than the rotating helicoid commonly found in other collapsible lenses. The original mount also contains a rangefinder coupling cam.
These details were examined during development before returning the customer's equipment.
The adapter is manufactured using Z-ABS / ABS-based 3D printing, combined with a metal camera-side mount flange.
Lens mount: Foca Universal bayonet
Camera mounts: Sony E / Nikon Z / Leica L
Material: ABS / metal
Manufacturing: 3D printing
Made in: Japan
Manufacturer: muk camera service
This is a made-to-order product.
The project is a good example of how 3D printing made it possible to manufacture a specialized adapter that had been requested for many years but was previously difficult to produce economically.
muk camera service specializes in rare, unusual and discontinued lens mounts, including historical European and Japanese camera systems.
Many of these projects begin with a request for a mount that is simply too unusual for conventional commercial production. When an actual camera and lens are available for examination, I can design, prototype and manufacture a solution using 3D printing and metal components.
Looking for an adapter for an unusual historical lens?
Please contact muk camera service. Even if no commercial adapter exists, we may be able to design and manufacture a custom solution.
International inquiries and orders are welcome.
