English Information

muk3D Cinema Lens ND Filter Attachment

This is a custom-made slip-on ND filter attachment for vintage cinema lenses that do not have a standard filter thread.

Many vintage cinema lenses, including lenses with ARRI and other cinema mounts, do not have a conventional filter thread at the front of the lens.

This can be inconvenient when using these lenses for video with a modern mirrorless camera. A matte box is one solution, but it can make a compact mirrorless camera setup unnecessarily large and heavy.

I wanted a simpler solution for shooting with vintage cinema lenses, so I designed this lens-cap-style slip-on filter holder.

The attachment fits over the front of the lens and provides a standard filter thread.

The example shown here was made for a Schneider Cine-Xenon 28mm f/2 with an ARRI Standard mount.

It uses a 67mm filter thread, allowing a 67–72mm step-up ring and a 72mm variable ND filter to be attached.

A step-up ring is useful because it makes changing filters faster and easier.

Another example was made for a Cine-Xenon 35mm f/2, using a 55mm filter.

Custom-made for each lens

This is not a universal adapter.

Because the outside diameter of the front of each cinema lens is different, the attachment is individually designed and manufactured for the lens being used.

The lens is measured before manufacturing, and the 3D-printed attachment is designed to fit that particular lens.

This makes it possible to create accessories for unusual vintage cinema lenses for which standard photographic accessories are difficult to find.

Different filter diameters can be used depending on the size of the lens.

The examples shown here use 55mm and 67mm filter threads.

For lenses around the normal focal-length range, 55mm can be practical. For wider lenses such as 28mm, a larger 67mm filter size is useful.

The attachment can also include a small opening to make the lens aperture scale visible.

Why use an ND filter?

When shooting video outdoors, an ND filter makes it possible to control the amount of light entering the lens while maintaining the desired aperture and shutter speed.

This is particularly useful when using vintage cinema lenses with modern mirrorless cameras for video.

Instead of building a large cinema rig with a matte box, this system allows a much more compact setup.

Manufacturing

Material: ABS resin
Manufacturing: 3D printing
3D printer: Zortrax
Filter sizes: 55mm / 67mm examples
Type: Custom slip-on filter attachment
Manufactured by: muk camera service, Japan

This is a one-off / custom production service rather than a mass-produced product.

The design and price depend on the size and shape of the lens.

The ability to manufacture a single custom part is one of the advantages of the muk 3D Print Project.

If you have a vintage cinema lens without a filter thread and need a compact way to use an ND filter, custom production may be possible.

International inquiries are welcome.
